The four keys to improving your game

Grip

It’s something I go over with every golfer, no matter whether they are a beginner or a pro. Proper grip helps you rotate the club and get it square and make contact.

Set-up

You must have proper posture, alignment and ball position if you want to hit the ball well. It’s what most golfers should work on. It’s your foundation and makes everything else better.

Weight transfer

If you want to hit the ball a long way, you need to transfer your weight properly.

Getting this right is what gives you distance.

Balance

If you stay balanced in your swing, you will hit the ball consistently. If you watch and notice how smooth the pros are, it’s because they stay balanced throughout their swing.

Q&A

Dream foursome?

Tiger Woods, and my two daughters.

What drew you to golf?

I grew up in the game, my dad played on the PGA and Champions Tours. I caddied for him on Tour when I was 16, 17. That hooked me.

Favorite golfer?

Tiger Woods. He does and tries things no one else can.

Best score?

I’ve shot 63 a half dozen times. Once was on my first first trip to (PGA Tour) Q School in 1996 at Colonial Country Club in Jackson, Miss. It was the course record at the time.

How many holes-in-one?

Two and a half. One came at Jupiter Dunes, a Par-3 course. That’s why it’s a half.

Favorite Hole at Hammock Creek?

Fourteen. Had my first ace there. There is a lot of action at that hole. When money is on the line, good and bad always happen there.

Favorite golf movie?

Tin Cup. It’s funny, ridiculous at times.

Favorite course?

Cypress Point. Playing that course is just awesome.

Favorite experience?

Winning the Reading (Calif.) Pro-Am four straight times. I had moved here, so the family all flew out on vacation each year. Winning paid for the whole trip.

Best part of teaching?

Seeing someone light up after hitting a shot they never hit before. The look on their face at that moment when everything comes together and they hit that shot.
