The First Tee of The Treasure Coast Annual Chapter Awards

Without caring mentors, positive youth development just doesn’t happen. At The First Tee, we believe that a meaningful, quality relationship between the coaches, volunteers and participants is vital to our program.

Coach of the Year – John Sedwitz

Sedwitz started as a volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club programs and was our Volunteer of the Year for 2017. He has continued his involvement with our chapter and has brought dedication and enthusiasm to each program he has assisted. Sedwitz was not only a volunteer for our chapter but also became a “Big” to students at Hobe Sound Elementary through our program partner Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In 2019, Sedwitz took on our Banner Lake and Samaritan Center programs. Thanks to Coach John, our students are able to attend class at his home club Hobe Sound Golf Club. Sedwitz has gone above and beyond in his first year as a coach, from providing students with framed certificates of completion to taking participants to lunch on the last day of class.

Volunteer of the Year – Conner MacDonald

MacDonald is a volunteer at Hammock Creek with Coach Bo Batchelor and has helped with class weekly since 2015. He also has volunteered with Special Olympics Martin County for three years. Conner enjoys helping other athletes develop their skills and has seen participants really progress. Conner is an avid and skilled golfer himself.

This school year, he played third on his team at The Pine School, finishing the season with a record of 13-2. He will continue playing the PGA Section’s Champions Tour through the end of this year and started off 2020 with The Junior Honda Classic in January. He has received Congressional Bronze and Silver medals for his volunteer work with The First Tee and is currently working on his Gold Medal.

Participant of the Year – Jacob Basa

Jacob started as a participant at the Martin County Golf Course and started The First Tee program when he was 6 years old. He continues to have a passion for golf. Jacob has competed in multiple Drive, Chip & Putt competitions and other local tournaments the past five years.

When Jacob was 8, he followed Coach Anthony to the Champions Club at Summerfield for the Saturday morning classes. Jacob recently volunteered to attend class earlier to help assist Coach Anthony set up the class and also start mentoring the beginner class.

Jacob’s favorite Core Value is Confidence, as it is earned from hard work and dedication.
