Jorge Fernandez Valdes of Cordoba, Argentina, has made two starts on the Minor League Golf Tour, both on the Champion course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, site of the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic.

Some difference.

On May 15, 2017, he ripped up his scorecard before he finished.

Wednesday, July 29, Valdes was the winner, leading all the way and earning $5,185. That’s $5,000 from the $27,105 purse and an additional $185 from the skins game. He led by five shots after opening with 65-67, then cruised home in 73 for 205, one stroke up on the 63-player field. Valdes made an eagle Monday, three birdies each round and a pair of double bogeys the final day.

Travis Trace of Jacksonville finished second on 70-67-69—206, collecting $2,885 in his first MLGT appearance. Overall, Trace had 10 birdies, four bogeys and a double.

There was a 36-hole cut at 7-over 147. Players who missed the cut or hadn’t entered the 54-hole event were eligible for a separate 18-hole consolation tournament Wednesday. Sophie Madden of London, England, and Daniel Obremski of Pittsburgh, Pa., matched 1-over-par 71s to share first place, receiving $605 apiece.

Play resumes next week, Monday on the Palmer course at Palm Beach Gardens and Tuesday at Abacoa Golf Club in Jupiter.
