MLGT: Driscoll Wins On Sixth Playoff Hole

James Driscoll of Brookline, Mass., got a measure of revenge in a Minor League Golf Tour event Tuesday, Nov. 24. Driscoll was the winner on the sixth hole of a playoff at Sandhill Crane in Palm Beach Gardens. It was the MLGT’s longest playoff in nearly 13 months. On Oct. 31, 2019, Driscoll was beaten on the sixth extra hole by Mike Miller of Brewster, N.Y., at Indian Spring in Boynton Beach.

James Driscoll has been the two longest recent MLGT playoffs, losing once and winning once in events that ran six extra holes.

Driscoll, Miami's Alan Wagner and John Duthie of Lansing, N.Y., had tied at 5-under-par 67 here Tuesday. Duthie was eliminated on the first extra hole, the par-4 sixth. Driscoll finally won despite a bogey at the par-4 second when Wagner hit his ball out of bounds. It was Driscoll’s second win since he joined the MLGT in April 2019. Miller did not play at Sandhill Crane.

In regulation, Driscoll made six birdies before he bogeyed the final hole. Wagner had an eagle, six birdies and three bogeys, Duthie five birdies. Wagner had one previous MLGT victory, Duthie none.

Driscoll collected $820 from the $4,410 purse, $183 from an optional bonus pool and $53.34 in the skins game for a total of $1,056.34.

Ryan Linton of Lake Forest, Ill., had the lowest 54-hole score of the week, 13-under-par 203, earning $1,000 toward a Monday qualifying fee on the PGA Tour in 2021. He shot 69 Sunday to tie for second at Winston Trails, 66 Monday at Indian Spring, losing out in as playoff, and 68 to tie for fourth here Tuesday.

There were 35 starters at Sandhill Crane, the municipal course for the City of Palm Beach Gardens. The layout is unusual in that there are five par-5s, five par-3s and eight par-4s. Most par-72 courses have 10 par-4s.
