Finding Your Correct Impact

If you have a loss of power, inconsistent shots, divots before the ball or you hit thin shots, try this drill at home or at the practice range.

Start by using a pitching wedge. Place a pool noodle held by two alignment rods approximately 3 feet in front of your ball. Then, take a proper grip, aim, and stance, and make a swing from knee high to knee high. Try to strike the ball under the noodle for a distance of about 10 yards. What you are trying to feel and achieve is having the handle of the club in front of the face of the club at impact.

Do not break your wrist or scoop the ball. There will be a minor weight shift from the back leg to the front leg.

After you have done this and feel what good contact should be like, take a 7-iron and swing hip-high to hip-high. Once again, you are trying to strike the ball under the noodle. You should start to feel ball contact make a small divot when the handle is in front of the clubface at impact.

Using this drill will give you the feeling of correct contact and the compression the club applies to the ball. I hope simple can help you achieve more consistency in your game.

Keep swinging.
