STRATEGIES ON PLAYING A NEW COURSE

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to play a very nice private golf course for the first time. The Country Club of Sapphire Valley is a beautiful mountain golf course in the western North Carolina mountains. The Head Professional was a great host for our group, providing us everything we needed to prepare for our round. We all warmed up on the practice range, hit some pitch shots in the short game area and finally tried to adjust to the fast and true greens. Looking out on to the first fairway from the tee box, we were all excited to test our skills on such a fine layout.

Jack Shoenfelt played his first 10 holes in 4-under to get the lead Tuesday, Aug. 24 and won the South Florida PGA Senior Section Championship Presented by Cadillac at Banyan Cay Resort & Club in West Palm Beach. Shoenfelt, the owner of Oriole Golf and Tennis Center in Margate, led a group of eight who earned spots in the 33rd Senior PGA Professional Championship.

Evan Bowser shot an 8-under 64 Tuesday to win the National Car Rental SFPGA Assistant Professional Championship at Wyndemere Country Club in Naples on Tuesday, Aug. 10. Jason Robinson of the Country Club at Mirasol (Palm Beach Gardens) was the top finisher from our area, T2 at 7-under 137.

FSGA: 62nd Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship Six SoFla girls get top-10 finishes

South Florida was well-represented at the 62nd Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship. In Girls 16-18, Jupiter's Caroline Patterson (T3) and Coral Springs' Kelly Shanahan (T6) were in the top 10. In Girls' 13-15, Delray Beach's Gabriella Albert (T3), Pembroke Pines' Rachel Gomez (T6), Jupiter's Gabriella DeGasperis (T6) and Boca Raton's Kayla Bryant (T10) accomplished the feat.
